To my dear friends,
We have been through so much together over the past eleven weeks and 1,000 miles. Thus, it is with a heavy heart that I now must bid you adieu. We have certainly had some great times together – taking in all the views in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia – but you were also there with me during the tough times. We sloshed together through the rain and mud, and you never once uttered a complaint. We fell together on the slick tree roots, and slid into streams off of slippery rocks, but you always helped me get solidly back onto my feet.
But the time has come for us to go our separate ways. You are worn out and trail-weary, and I must continue on and complete this grueling journey without you. While I have found new friends to hike with, you were my very first hiking companions, and I will certainly never forget you.
